Summer 2008

MEMBERSHIP
MATTERS

By: Samantha Higgins,
Director of Membership

Samantha_Higgins_headshot

It is that time of year again…..time to renew your membership to VJJA! The new membership year began on July 1, 2008. To continue your membership and ensure uninterrupted publications, renew, renew, renew!

I know I have said it before, but VJJA’s greatest asset is truly its members. The 2007-08 membership year closed with 1064 members - 1064 members with dedication to at-risk children and families, who offer a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of human services and the competent abilities to advance our field.

As a reward for continuing your membership, every renewal received by September 1, 2008 will be entered in a drawing for VJJA logo items and other fun prizes, including a grand prize paid registration to the 32nd Fall Juvenile Justice Institute, a $100 value!

Membership dues are $20.00 and applications are available online at: www.vjja.org. Be advised the website has been experiencing some technical difficulties. Therefore, you MAY NOT be able to renew online. If this happens to you, simply print the renewal form from the website or request one from me via email then drop it in the mail. Cash, checks and money orders are accepted by mail. I do not have the capability to accept payments by phone.

If you wish to receive a paper Advocate as opposed to an e-Advocate, you must indicate that on your membership/renewal form or else you will automatically receive an e-Advocate.

The membership application form also provides the opportunity to donate monies to the President's Child Advocacy Fund. All donations to CAF are earmarked strictly for child advocacy projects and campaigns.

District Membership News:

To the Blue Ridge District, you should already know how ambitious your Chairperson is and if you did not, well here goes…. First, let’s set the background. Former Blue Ridge District Chair, Robert Foster, set a personal goal for the Blue Ridge to have more members than its counterparts in Western Virginia, the Southwest and Valley Districts. His successor and your present Chair, Susan Farmer, holds the same determination and desire to bring your district to the forefront of VJJA and she has been successful.  The Blue Ridge District closed the 2007-08 membership year with more members than the Southwest and Valley Districts! And Susan, you have your predecessor to thank! The new memberships in the 21st District Court Service Unit in the last quarter of the membership year helped put Blue Ridge over and above Southwest and Valley.  Way to go Robert and Susan - you make a great team!

The Capital District closed the 2007-08 membership year as the district with the most members. This is a great achievement for Capital District. Congratulations!

The Tidewater District membership came in a close second to Capital, likely due to not being able to have their 2008 District Spring Conference, which in the past has been one of their largest membership drives. Conference or no conference, Tidewater continues to set the bar and be an outstanding role model for the other districts to follow.

The Northern, Southwest, and Valley Districts are in the mist of either planning or offering local training opportunities. Be on the look out for training announcements. All of the VJJA trainings offer the opportunity to join or renew your membership – because you have to be a member in order to attend.

In closing, I thank you in advance for renewing your membership with the Association, and as a reminder, please make sure I have any updates to your place of employment, mailing address and e-mail address. Otherwise you may miss out on important information and announcements. Feel free to contact me at (540) 463-5401 or at membership@vjja.org
