Tidewater Chapter
Tidewater VJJA had a busy December and is off to a busy 2009!
Operation Holiday: In a joint venture with the St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, the Tidewater VJJA once again provided holiday food baskets to the families of court-involved children. Monies were donated from both the state board and the local VJJA chapter and 224 baskets were assembled and delivered. Each basket included a “turkey and all of the trimmings”. Special thanks to member Paul Greggs who originally forged this partnership and has been instrumental in successful implementation each year.
January Training Event: A day of training entitled “Winter Blues: Suicide and Self Injurious Behaviors” is planned for January 23 in Newport News. Speakers include Christine Hall from Poplar Springs Hospital and Diane Creech from North Spring. Registration materials can be found at: www.vjja.org/Training/VJJA_Training_Tidewater_01-2009.pdf. Attendees are asked to bring toiletry items for donation to Newport News Juvenile Detention.
Spring Institute: Plans are also underway for the Tidewater Spring Institute, scheduled for March 26th and 27th in Virginia Beach. Save the dates!
Other District News: The Portsmouth Court Service Unit collected food and stocking stuffers for the holidays. Probation, Parole, Intake and Office Services competed to determine which unit could bring in the most donations. The parole staff beat the probation staff by 8 items. Items were donated to the Parc Family Shelter in Portsmouth. Special thanks to Sarah Wray of the Portsmouth Court Service Unit who coordinated the effort.
Blue Ridge Chapter
Operation Holiday: The Blue Ridge district chapter enjoyed participating in the association's Operation Holiday initiative. Donations of board games, books, and other items were donated to various residential facilities in the Blue Ridge area to include Lynchburg Detention, Roanoke Detention, SPARC House and Opportunity House.
The district now claims a piece of real estate having adopted a section of highway in Campbell County. Thanks to officer Ben Morgan for making arrangements.
Member Laura Maynard, formerly an Intake Officer with the 23rd District (Salem) was will begin working as a Probation/Intake Officer in the Christiansburg office (which is in a different VJJA District). The Blue Ridge district is losing a great asset, but our loss is the Southwest district's gain.
